Stuck at Grand Rapids

Just days before flying to China for my long-waited China job, I found myself in a familiar and yet strange place, "GRR - Grand Rapids Gerald Ford Airport".

Due to the strong thunderstorm condition in Chicago, my 6:26pm UA flight to Chicago last night was delayed by 1 hour at the time I decided to resurrect my trip home. After rebooking to a Northwest flight at 7:54pm. Around 6:50pm, lightning started to strike Grand Rapids, along with strong storms, all the flights were put on hold again, the Northwest flight coming in from Chicago was stuck at Saginaw, which is 138 miles from GRR, for refueling, which basically means it's not going to make it. Not only that, there wouldn't be any flight from any company could fly out of Grand Rapids that night.

Now, after staying at Crowne Plaza for a pleasant night, I am praying at Grand Rapids airport again, hoping there is a way to get me back to San Francisco home today. So far... it doesn't look so bright, my 9:05am flight has been rescheduled to 11am, the reason? the pilot needs more sleep (over this 50-minute flight), according to Government rule.

So, at 8:45am, I am still hoping the 'forecasted' 'scattered strong storm' could come in later, after our 11am flight could take off successfully. I guess the only thing that's comforting is I can have wireless access to the internet, and still be able to finish this blog.

What is Google doing

I was sitting in my Grand Rapids hotel, surfing the new Beijing E-Government website, and then jumped to my friend Jeff's company "That's Beijing" magazine, and out of curiousity, checking some of the Chinese tutoring job postings, and all of sudden, I noticed that there are some Google Ads on the side. Normally, it would not even catch my eyes, I have almost trained myself not to click, not to even look at online ads, but this time, what I saw was: "Grand Rapids Tutoring", showing up tutoring ads is not fancy at all, Google is well known for providing 'relevant' ads, but this is the first time I have seen ads based on geographical location of the computer.

Kudos, Google!

Gambas al Ajillo | Sautéed shrimp, extra
Atún en Escabeche | Herbed seared raw tuna*, marinated carrot & leek ribbons, spicy mango purée & scallion oil.

Earthquake in Richmond

I was sitting in my office, and the house shook for about 1/2 a second, I ran downstairs, XY says she noticed that too. It's always like that, when you realized what has happened, it's usually too late.

This reminds of a statement one made when comparing California Real Estate to that of Florida: "Yeah, there are earthquakes in California, but we don't have earthquake season".

PS. through this, I found that you can do these two things:
  1. Find out more information about this earthquake at http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Quakes/nc40187964.htm
  2. report 'what you feel' to U.S. Geological Survey http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca/STORE/X40187964/ciim_display.html
